The Annual Omani British Business Council conference took place on Wednesday 27th July 2022 at the Mansion House, London. The title, ‘New Energy in Oman’, was a deliberate play on words to convey both the focus on renewables and the revitalisation of the Omani economy and society. Despite the rail strikes, the event was extremely well attended – over 250 guests were welcomed to the Egyptian Hall of Mansion House, with a fairly even split between Omani and non Omani attendees.
‘Unshook till the end of time’, the UK and Oman have an extremely close economic and commercial relationship, particularly in the energy space, with Shell and bp maintaining a presence in the Sultanate since the early days of oil. ‘New Energy in Oman’ celebrated the unique bond between our countries, and included discussions on renewables, decarbonisation, green finance and other aspects of the Sultanate’s energy future.
The event was held under the auspices of HE Abdulsalam Al Murshidi, President of the Oman Investment Authority (OIA, Oman’s sovereign wealth fund), and compered by Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles, Chair of the OBBC. It included opening addresses by Sir Sherard, Representative Lord Mayor Alderman Sir William Russell, HE Qais Al Yousef (Minister of Commerce, Industry & Investment Promotion), and Simon Penney (Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for the Middle East), who has spent recent months working on negotiations for the UK-GCC Free Trade Agreement.
The full programme for the day can be viewed on the New Energy in Oman website. Please find an outline below, including transcripts of the remarks by HE Qais Al Yousef, Minister of Commerce Industry and Investment Promotion. We have also included the presentation given by Oman's new Commerce and Investment Attaché to London, Arwa Al Balushi, who previously worked for the Oman Investment Authority, and Undersecretary for Investment HE Asilah Al Samsami's presentation.
